VINEYARD Barrett Vineyards in Calistoga for the Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, Oakville AVA for the Cabernet Franc, and Amador for the Petite Sirah

WINEMAKER Owner/Winemaker Heidi Peterson Barrett started her own label, La Sirena, in 1994 in Calistoga, Napa Valley. She is well known for her numerous 100 Robert Parker point wines that she created for clients, including 100 points in 1992 and 1997 for Screaming Eagle. She and her husband, Chateau Montelena winemaker Bo Barrett chose the name La Sirena because it means “the mermaid” in Spanish and Italian. Barrett is a longtime scuba diver and wanted to honor the ocean and its inhabitants whether they be fictional or factual.

HARVEST & CELLAR NOTES This is a blend of 50 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 44 percent Syrah, 4 percent Petite Sirah, and 2 percent Cabernet Franc. The harvest occurred in the first weeks of September. This Napa Valley AVA wine is comprised of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah from Barrett Vineyards in Calistoga, Cabernet Franc from Oakville, and Petite Sirah from Amador. The wine was aged in 100 percent French oak barrels, 35 percent of which were new, for 20 months.

TASTING NOTES This enticing wine is deep ruby colored in the glass with aromas of dark plum, cassis, coffee, and milk chocolate. In the palate there are enticing flavors of black cherry, raspberry, and pomegranate with pleasantly grippy, mouth drying tannins. There are great savory notes in the finish with touches of dried thyme and sage before a bright splash of acidity in the back of your throat. Drink now through 2030.

J MOSS
2016 MEE LANE CABERNET SAUVIGNON
NAPA VALLEY

LIMITED EDITION 275 cases produced

VINEYARD Mee Lane Vineyard, Rutherford AVA, Napa Valley Sirah

WINEMAKER James Moss is originally from Dallas, Texas. His introduction to fine wine came while he worked for a wine distributor there and from visiting Napa Valley for ongoing education. He moved to California in 1998 to follow his passion and become a winemaker.

HARVEST & CELLAR NOTES Grapes were harvested in late September, gently destemmed, and cold soaked for 4 days to help extract tannins from the skins. They were then transferred into small fermenters and hand punched down two to three times per day. The wine was subsequently pressed, transferred to oak barrels, and allowed to undergo malolactic fermentation. It was aged for 32 months in new French oak.

TASTING NOTES This beautiful wine is concentrated violet in color and first hits the nose with whiffs of lifted eucalyptus and menthol. A deeper dive reveals heady fruit scents of red cherry, red plum, black raspberry, pomegranate, and dark chocolate. It has flavors of cranberry, pomegranate, black cherry, and clove set into a sturdy tannic structure with lingering flavors of pomegranate pith and dried sage in the persistent finish.  It is definitely California born but with European elegance and restraint. Drink now through 2028.

BRAVANTE
2017 HOWELL MOUNTAIN MERLOT
NAPA VALLEY

LIMITED EDITION 225 cases produced

VINEYARD Bravante Estate Vineyard, Howell Mountain, Napa Valley

WINEMAKER Duane Dappan was in charge of winemaking for the Bravante 2017 Howell Mountain Merlot with the assistance of viticulturist Peter Murphy.

HARVEST & CELLAR NOTES One hundred percent of the fruit used to make this wine was grown on Bravante’s estate vineyards on Howell Mountain. Bravante was lucky to harvest in mid-September well before the tragic fires of the late fall. The summer of 2017 was widely known to be quite hot with an earlier than usual harvest, but Bravante’s vines and grapes did not suffer from heat stress due to their elevation on Howell Mountain. This estate wine is a blend of fruit from Block 1 which leans toward a Bordeaux flavor profile and fruit from Block 5 which is classic Howell Mountain in style. After fermentation the wine was transferred to French oak barrels, 40 percent of which was new, and aged for 22 months. Bottling occurred in September 2019.

TASTING NOTES This stunning 89 percent Merlot and 11 percent Cabernet Sauvignon is the color of blueberry preserves and has aromas of red plum, red raspberry, pomegranate, blueberry jam, and toasted oak spice. In the mouth flavors of cranberry, blue fruits, dark chocolate, clove, and anise intermingle on your tongue. The tannins come on strong at first but recede into a smooth finish and there’s a pleasant splash of bright acidity in the finish as well. Drink now or anytime over the next seven to thirteen years.
